Lay’s Ketchup Chips – My Favorite Thing About Canada
There are a zillion things about Canada I love, starting with my family: aunt, uncles, tons of cousins & 2nd cousins and of course my 90 year old grandma seen here:
If you can't figure out which one's my grandma, then this may be the wrong blog for you.
My favorite Auntie & her beautiful family tops this list:
Grandma, Aunt Lisa & her oldest daughter Rosalinda.
But from the time I was little (we’ve had our family reunion/grandma’s milestone birthdays since I was little), I remember one of my favorite things about Canada is that their potato chip selection is vastly different than ours. For God’s sake, the make ketchup chips.
Ketchup chips are even better than salt & vinegar & dill pickle chips, though I love them both, they don’t come close to the delectable tangy sensation of each crunchy bite.
Best dang chips this side of the great lakes.
So while we’re talking about food, here’s a shot of how we Chinese folks like to eat: 12 course meals or no food at all. If you speak Chinese, you can hear my dad in the background saying, “She just keeps eating (referring to me).” But duh, who wouldn’t keep eating that scrumptious food?:
Yes, we really eat like this all the time. Especially when we get together after a long time apart. We only had 8 courses the night before though, so it wasn’t video worthy. Though we apparently got a tongue lashing from the horrible waiter because he was left just under a 10% tip…but when I say he was awful, I mean, he never cracked a smile, was not gracious. We had to set down our own plates and dishes. He never asked if we needed anything, we always had to flag him down, etc.
Anyhow, that was like the worst part of the trip and was over so quickly and was awesome from then on.
So we caused quite a ruckus, as we always do with these big family trips.
So follow the math here:
There are 6 of us and only 5 can fit in my dad’s car for the road trip up. Sooo, I fly up while Dad, hubby, 2 kids + my nephew drive up. This means:
- Friday: Pick me up from the airport
- Saturday: Pick up my sister from the airport
- Sunday: Drive my hubby to the airport
- Tuesday: Drive my sister to the airport
- Thursday: Drive my uncle to the airport
- Saturday: Drive my aunt & cousins to the airport
6/8 days were spent shuttling to the airport and back as well as seeing lots of family & Niagara falls (I’ll post a vid after all have been rendered and uploaded to YouTube).
But all in all, it was so good for my heart & soul. Each time I see my tiny little grandmother I remember it may be my last and hold on to her as much as I can. This feisty old woman is worth every straight 24 hour drive we take up there.
So here’s to Canada: you hold the keys to my heart…my family & ketchup chips.

I've never seen ketchup chips – but I don't mess with those kinds of “chips” – i dont think i even ate chips like that before except for some fritos bbq one day cause i had no choice to =/
your grandmother looks good, healthy and glowing (at least that's what i perceive from the picture)
i never met my grandparents at all – had some instances where i spoke to them over the phone but such a douche i was when i was younger, i didnt want to speak with them. i miss the opportunity to, sad but nowadays i try to do what i can.
24 hour drive is crazy, but worth it from what i can tell.
Pheak!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's been so long my friend…been gone a long time and had yucky computer viruses that chopped me off at the knees again…so I finally am covered (I believe (again)).
Anyways, been working like a maniac so not much time to hang out with you on Twitter, so keep me posted. Next time I go to Canada, I'll bring back a dozen & ship them off to my favorite peeps. Might be about 5 years tho, so don't let me forget. But they're really yummy. Fritos BBQ=ugh.
Thanks about Grandma. She's starting to lose her memory so we're going to have to visit her more often. I am grateful to have at least had her in my life. My other grandparents died too young.
I got to spend some quality time with my dad on the drive back, so I got the scoop on tons of stuff I've always wondered about like how his dad died, more details about his arranged marriage with mom, and more war stories.
So yeah, I understand when you say you do what you can. You appreciate your family NOW so you work towards building a stronger one NOW. I can respect that.
Have you been working on your blog more? You had mentioned that last chat…
I was wonder where you were! I kept checking. Glad you had a good time and I've never in my life seen Ketchup chips… and I'm about 73 miles from the Canadian border. I'm going to have to pay better attention…
I LOVE Dill chips though!
You are sooo sweet. I've been going through withdrawals from your posts. I love your daily contributions. Quite honestly, I'm in AWE of you=)
My work has me very sadly neglecting my beloved blog, however, the time off has turned up a few ideas that might be fun in some upcoming posts.
And those ketchup chips are insanely delicious for those of us that like dill as well as salt & vinegar type chips. You must go or I'll have to add you to my list of people to send a bag to next time I head up to Canada (which is quite a bit further for me at over 1,200 miles.)
K, now for some more ketchup chips and to settle in with catching up on a months worth of your posts…
you should get that plugin for your blog – the one that allows you to subscribe to the posts' comments so we know when we're being replied to silly =P
my blog is ok, its at where it needs to be, but i'm trying a new technique with internet marketing at this point to see if i can make some money off that as well.
i dont have a lot of time for that but im slowly working on it i strive for it more nowadays
Oh how funny. I had upgraded to this new commenting system because it is more 'sophisticate' and so it may just be a setting I have turned off? Thanks for the heads up.
Good luck & have fun with your IM efforts. There's no other business like it, is there?
That was a lot of food!!! There's nothing better than food and family! For me food is not necessary (i mean I'm happy with some carrots and an apple for the day) but when family has gathered it just makes the food more delicious! Until it comes time to tip and your family happens to be cheapos. Then i have to overcompensate for the belly-stuffed fools and end up thinking I should have just stayed home w/my carrots and apples!
It's so crazy because we always eat like this when we get together, special occasions, weddings, etc. And you're so right. I love having meals with my family. There's nothing like it.
But that first night we had dinner and that nasty little waiter was complaining about his tip was a first. I'm notorious for over-tipping, but even I would've been hard pressed to give him 10% that night. So yes, I agree there are advantages to carrots and apples…but then I wouldn't have had such a memorable experience.
